My Opinion of The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial

I saw the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial on Monday, August 22nd, one day before the historic 5.8 earthquake on Tuesday, August 23rd and five days before Hurricane Irene swung through on Saturday, August 27th, both of which we experienced in D.C.

The statue itself is a beautiful, striking, very impressive piece of work. The memorial overall is nice (though both are smaller in person then I thought they would be) and the quotes by Dr. King on all the walls are powerful and moving (had me re-reading some of my books on him and wanting to get more) however and I could be wrong on this, if I am, I stand corrected, I did not see any quotes from Dr. King's "Beyond Vietnam" speech where he speaks against the Vietnam War but I was not surprised about that.

In my opinion, anytime The Federal Government is going to put their official stamp on a memorial to honor a black man, depending on who that black man is and what his stance was, and what he lived his life for and died fighting for, I think certain quotes are going to be left out or re-worded.

On one hand, I am happy this memorial was done, on the other hand, I honestly think they could have chosen probably up to 10 or 20 other poses of Dr. King. From what I've heard The King Family approved this final image so as they say, it now is what it is.

Some folks who have seen it were so moved by it they cried. Some thought he looks too mean or angry. Some thought he should look this way as if he's saying, we still have a long way to go and there still is no need to smile, a justified, uncompromising pose. Some are totally happy with it. Like all art, it is subjective upon the viewer's eyes as to their interpretation.

I followed this story pretty much from the groundbreaking via black press and black radio, including getting all the updates and overall, I wish the groups that handled the whole memorial would have been more inclusive of many others ideas, visions, input, insight, etc. instead of so exclusive as to all the decisions and choices. Even if as it's been reported, a Black American Stone Sculptor was not found or chosen for this project, and that was why they chose a Chinese stone sculptor, I would have liked to seen more Black artists considered who submitted conceptual designs of the overall memorial as the final 10 picks for consideration, etc. From what I understand a local DC black owned and operated architectural company was involved in the project but not the statue itself.

Poet and author Maya Angelou said in an article today that the recently unveiled monument to civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. is inscribed with a quote taken out of context that makes the preacher seem "arrogant." In my opinion, none of the encrypted words came off as arrogant to me but I do think it is a good catch by Dr. Angelou that they paraphrased some of his words and quotes on the inscriptions on the walls. I agree one's quotes should not be paraphrased, especially not in stone and esp not in one's own memorial.

Because of Hurricane Irene hitting D.C. the weekend of August 27th-28th, there was an announcement by the Committee that they are postponing the official ceremony to some time in September or October or possibly indefinitely.

Tom Joyner told Rev. Sharpton this morning to suggest to the MLK Memorial Committee that the MLK Memorial Dedication should be moved to MLK's Holiday: Monday, January 16th, 2012.

Ultimately, I feel like all things in life, It's All Divine. The MLK Tribute will take place exactly when it's supposed to take place and not a day earlier or a day later. It's on God's Time so I'm good with that. I'm glad I got to see it on Monday night ahead of both the earthquake and the storm.

Statues are forever so we have a long time to talk about this and discuss it and even critique it but I do look forward to all the discussions and especially the black writers and black bloggers pov's after they see it as well. I think people in the upcoming weeks opinions on the memorial will be very varied honestly. ~LT

When I read that Cee Lo has a new video starring Jaleel White I thought he was going to have Jaleel playing Urkel as a grown up Urkel who never changed wearing the same Urkel clothes. (would have been a funny yet too easy move) After seeing the video I see he chose to have Jaleel play a younger version of himself (Cee Lo) in a 1950s era scenario breaking the fourth wall with humor. Creative.

My Super 8 Review: Why Generation Connect (Generation X) Will Enjoy This Movie (And Their Parents & Children Too)

Ah, 1979. Sony introduces The Walkman. Rubix Cubes have become a pop icon. The Knack's "My Sharona" is rockin' on the radio. Pink Floyd releases "The Wall". Michael Jackson's "Off The Wall" is in stores, on the radio, and playing everywhere. Also on the radio and in record stores you'll find the music of The Bee Gees, ABBA, Donna Summer, Earth, Wind, & Fire, and Rod Stewart. Disco is juuuuuuuust dying out. (And I do mean just.)

President Jimmy Carter is President. Gas is about 86 cents a gallon. Movies like Superman, Every Which Way But Loose, Rocky II, Alien, The Amityville Horror, Star Trek: The Motion Picture, Moonraker, The Muppet Movie, The Deer Hunter, and Kramer vs. Kramer are playing in theaters.

Turn on the TV and you see: Walter Cronkite anchoring the news, M*A*S*H, The Waltons, Happy Days, Little House on the Prairie, Saturday Night Live (Seasons 4 & 5 are on the air), Charlie's Angels, Family Feud, Quincy, M.E., The Love Boat, Three's Company, Dallas ("Who Shot J.R.?"), Different Strokes ("Whatchutalkinbout, Willis?"), Mork and Mindy ( Na-Nu-Na-Nu!) and Taxi.

The arcades are not even in full swing yet so pinball machines are still the thing but a new device called Mattel's Electronics Football is either in the hands or on the wish list of not only every little boy but even grown men.

But I digress.

Super 8 is a fun, funny, and not to sound too cliche but in this case it's true, "Filled with Thrills and Chills!" type of movie.

It takes you back to a simpler time. No computers, no iPhones, no iPads, no Internet. It has elements of E.T., The Goonies, Close Encounters of The Third Kind, Jaws, and a few others.

Watching this movie made me realize what I have been thinking about for the last 20 years or so: "What Happened To That Good Ole' Summer Movie Feeling I Used To Get?"

The nature of Hollywood Super Duper Summer Movies to go bigger and louder has somehow become all too routine and formulaic but in the case of Super 8, J.J. Abrams and Steven Spielberg manage to re-capture that feeling we had as kids back in the'70s and '80s when we used to see Sci-Fi films in the summer and left the theater or the Drive-In feeling entertained, excited, happy, satisfied, and looking forward to seeing it again.

One of the strong points of this movie is the cast of child actors. They really delivered. Great performances of real kids portraying real kids without it coming off as too campy or too corny or as if they were chosen out of the Hollywood Squeaky Clean Child Actors Guild ("We need 4 cutesy child actors for this movie! Call SAG!") Not here. Just kids being kids.

This movie also surprised me in that aside from all the action and suspense scenes (something Spielberg is a master at) it also has a lot of heart and soul in the story line and actually made me care about the characters.

I must add that not only the pace of the story is great but the humor keeps this movie moving and the audience I was with ate it up. If you were born in the mid to late '60s to early '70s, again, you will especially love this movie.

If it weren't for today's great special effects I could see it being filmed and released in '79, '83, '84, or '85 and folks would still get a kick out of it.

Overall a good, fun summer film that even with the at times excessive cussing from the kids, by today's standards of language, today's kids will enjoy overall and probably find the cussing mild.

One other thing this movie managed to do to the audience including myself: We all stayed to actually see the credits roll. How often does that happen today? Most people leave immediately at the ending except a few. In this case, everyone stayed and we were glad we did. If you stay until the credits roll I think you will too. ~ 4 1/2 Stars. ~ LT

In 1984, my Mom was teaching at Eastern High School on East Capitol St. N.E. right across from RFK Stadium where The Washington Redskins played.

She asked me to meet her there to both help her clean up and help prepare her classroom for her new class (something she drafted me to do wherever she taught over the years no matter where she taught and no matter what school I was attending! lol!).

It was smoking hot outside. Had to be over 90 degrees. This was pretty warm for mid-September in D.C. even though we can get hot days during that month too. She had all her windows open so we could get air. A couple of her students also came to help as I think it was an Administrative/Staff Day with only staff and cleaning crews in the bldg. My Mom had students who loved her so much they would show up to help her even on their own Student Half Days and after school.

Sometime in the afternoon, while cleaning up her classroom, we could hear The Jacksons doing their soundcheck down the street in RFK. We knew they were coming so there of course was already a buzz but we had no idea that on this day they were not only here in town but right across the street and actually rehearsing! lol! We all leaned out the windows. Talk about excited! We could feel the electricity even from up the street! We spent the rest of the day cleaning and leaning out the windows while grooving and listening to The Jacksons running through their show. That brought smiles to all of our faces and made the cleaning go quickly.

My Mom, Sister, and I got tickets to the Victory Tour D.C. Stop sometime earlier in the summer and we even made a big sign for The Jacksons as it was part of a local radio station's promotional contest: "Who Can Make The Best Jacksons, We Love You! Sign!" We went to the Saturday night show. Exciting and fun times.

There was a great chance The Jacksons would skip D.C. for various reasons. One being the entrance to the stadium for Big Rig Equipment was not steep or deep enough (the ground level entry ramps) and the ramp entry ceilings were not high enough to get all The Jacksons tour equipment inside. RFK actually had construction crews come in that summer right before the tour to deepen the ramps so all the equipment could get through. D.C. wanted The Victory Tour! lol! I still remember that. This is when it hit me even as a young teen that not only we as kids loved the Jacksons but grown adults and the city itself wanted The Jacksons to not miss D.C. and for D.C. not to miss out on this event - This Was Serious! lol!

The Press and Media covered "The Digging of RFK's Entry Ramps For The Jacksons." It was funny but, man were we glad that everything was finally a "Go!" and The Jackson were coming to D.C.! I remember thinking to myself as I saw the news clips, "The city actually cleared the previous laws for height requirements for RFK entrances and dug the ramps down deeper? They cleared that for The Jacksons? Now That's Some Power! I Love It!" ~ "Can You Feel It? Can You Feel It? Can You Feel It?" ~LT

June is Black Music Month. Black Music Month was started in 1979 to celebrate the significance, artistry, and contributions of Black Musicians. We must honor them not only this month but every month. As we know, Black Music is really World Music because of it's global impact over the years and how it spans the globe, crossing and influencing cultures and crossing and erasing previously held barriers and boundaries.

One such artist that has this talent and ability has caught my attention. I would describe his music as a touch of Art of Noise, a dash of St. Germain, mixed with elements of Deep Forest. Levphonic's music has been described as "Electronic Instrumental with a touch of NuJazz and Down Tempo." He calls it "Cosmic Fusion."

I've mentioned before that back in the 80s, I used to sit around with friends and we would try to imagine what music would sound like in the year 2000 and beyond. Levphonic's music to me are those ideas manifested. There are only a handful of artists out here today that I can put in that category. They are truly Beyond Category. Lev took time out of his burgeoning career to swing through The Lounge for his first ever interview! I am honored! Enjoy! ~LT

LT: Thanks for swinging through the Lounge, Levphonic! It's an honor to interview you. I am digging your music! Is this your first album?

Levphonic: Thanks for having me, LT! Yes, this album is the first in a long line of many!

LT: What was the inspiration for The Urban Jungle?

Levphonic: The Urban Jungle was inspired by life in general. I knew that I wanted to create a work of musical art. Something that was more than just some sounds thrown together in order to make a quick dollar. I wanted to create a soundtrack to my life. Music filled with emotion and that would move the listener and send them on a journey.

LT: Tell us a little about yourself - Where are you from? Where did you grow up?

Levphonic: I was born and raised in the High Desert in Southern California until I was about 10. After that, we moved to San Antonio Texas. That is where I spent most of my adolescence. Since moving from TX. I have bounced back and forth between Atlanta and Cali.

LT: How long have you been playing music?

Levphonic: Since the age of 2.

LT: What kind of an artist/musician would you consider yourself as?

Levphonic: I'm very introverted when I work on music because it is like spending time with the love of my life. When it comes to my music I like to experiment and tend to fall away from the norm. I am an artist that creates from life's experience.

LT: Describe your music.

Levphonic: 2 simple words! Cosmic Fusion.

LT: Cosmic Fusion! I like that! What inspires you? What inspires your music? What inspires the songs you create?

Levphonic: Water! HA! My thoughts just flow when I am in the shower or by the ocean. Other musicians inspire my creativity but I often get inspiration from everyday encounters with people. I used to work at Lenox Mall in Atlanta and I would sit in the food court on my breaks and just watch people and think of theme music for them. It sounds funny but it's true.

LT: Great story. How old were you when you got your first synthesizer/keyboard/instrument?

Levphonic: My Mom bought me my first Casio at the age of 2. I used to play on it for hours! She also bought my first professional one when I was about 15 going on 16. (A Technics KN 1200) She said, "I could have bought you a car but with this you can get any car that you want."

LT: Nice! What was it about the keys that attracted you?

Levphonic: As long as I remember I was just always intrigued by the keys. I can't even explain it. We are partners for life. I have struggled throughout my life teaching myself how to play. When I was younger I tried to have people teach me but I they always said I didn't play the "Right Way". I'm hard headed though so I just learned on my own. LOL!

LT: Self taught! Lovin it! Do you consider yourself a producer/writer/director, all of the above?

Levphonic: I consider myself to be a music creator and writer. I think that the term producer has been overused in this day and age to describe what beat makers want to be. I associate the word producer with people like Quincy Jones, Curtis Mayfield, Issac Hayes, Willie Hutch, Prince, Berry Gordy and so on. Those guys are music producers in every sense of the word. Right now I am a music creator that is working my way up to being a producer.

LT: What do you think of music today? Indie? Commercial? Videos?

Levphonic: WOW! Good one. I will start by saying this. I respect the fact that the commercial artists are out there doing their thing but I will also say that most of it is not for me. With that being said, the Indie music scene is much more artistic and expressive of real emotion because majority of the artists are making what is in their heart, mind and soul. As far as videos go, I am glad that edgy thought provoking videos are still around. We as people need to be visually stimulated with a variety of sights not just the same old Rock-Hip-Pop scenes we've been seeing since the 90's. My main thing...BE CREATIVE!

LT: Is Electronic music your #1 forte?

Levphonic: By default, yes. I say that because I feel that is my "Foster-Genre" It has adopted my music for now but I will be grown soon and I can move out and create my own home.

LT: Before you sit down at the keyboard, do you dream of the music? Does it just come to you as you are playing on the keys?

Levphonic: For sure. I dream of it. I will hear faint voices and tunes in my sleep that give me goose bumps and wake me up sending me running for my keyboard. When I am sitting at my keyboard I will hear something in my head and I will try to recreate it as best as possible. Heavenly Bodies, the first track from The Urban Jungle was one of those songs I heard in my dreams. I actually have stripped it down quite a bit from what I had in my head though. The one in my dream had horns and voices on top of harps and many other sounds that would probably give the average listener a migraine trying to take it all in. LOL! Most of my songs are a stripped down version of what I hear in my head.

LT: That's amazing. What is your goal right now for your music?

Levphonic: For now I just want to be involved with as many projects and opportunities as possible. I want to be on the shows and movies that you watch. I want to be involved in selling you your favorite clothes and goods in commercials. All without the listener realizing it is me that they are hearing.

LT: What are your long term goals for your music?

Levphonic: As long as I can wake up at the age of 60 and still have music as a career that is all I need. Longevity!

LT: I understand you have done some scoring for TV? What shows? Channels? Interested in scoring films? Plays, etc.?

Levphonic: I have had my music placed on Adult Swim's Aqua Teen Hunger Force. I have done various newscasts from CNN to local news as well as many websites including Blood Sweat and Tears Clothing. You can hear some songs of mine on Breakroom's last album. They are a great group out of Atlanta that deals with some soulful Hip Hop vibes. I hope to work with them again soon. LT: Where can folks listen to and buy your music?

Levphonic: I have a list of sites. The Velvet Music Group Website, iTunes, CD Baby, Amazon, Last Fm has some good free songs from me and one collabo with my label mate DJ Unwind, I have a podcast that I do periodically on PodOMatic. My Raheem DeVaughn remix is on Indaba.

LT: What is it like making music in this age with the technology, Internet, etc.?

Levphonic: To be honest I am still learning new things about it everyday. I read a ton of books in the 90's about how to "Get On" and none of that applies anymore so it is really a new adventure for me each day. As far as the creation goes it is great, because whatever you want to put in your composition its at your fingertips. There are still certain elements that will not be able to be as organic or as real as you want them but if you know someone that record that element live and send you a Pro Tools file of it. That part is great!

LT: What are the upsides and downsides of being an Indie artist trying to get heard today?

Levphonic: Upsides: Freedom! You can do what you want to do sonically without anyone telling you its not commercial enough or you need a radio hit. Downsides: Promotion! Coming up with the right avenue to get yourself heard without the help of a major label is hard mentally, physically, and especially financially. It can be a strain on the old wallet! LOL!

LT: Do you prefer the spotlight, limelight or do you prefer to stay behind the scenes when it comes to your music? To getting your recognition, etc?

Levphonic: I will put it this way, I would love the limelight if it was given to me in another country and I can come home and be just some normal dude on the train. I'd be like, "Who the heck is Levphonic?" LOL!

LT: Lol! How important is it to own your work? To own your master recordings?

Levphonic: I can't stress how important it is! If that didn't matter I would have about 20 songs on your favorite radio station by now. I always hear about the people in the past that gave up their rights to ownership of their songs and just shake my head in disbelief. I could never do that! I made this. Nobody else!

LT: Any goodies in your vault you'd like to share? lol!

Levphonic: Sure I have 2! They are both remixes that I did in the past but never was able to get them to the proper outlet. One is a remix of of a song called Six Feet Under by Liquid Spy Network. It is a song that was straight Hardcore Electro Funk but I just put some Levphonic on it. The second song is my remix of Shakedown's "At Night" I heard the Accapella and just fell in love with the girls voice. I knew it was a song for me to lay hands on! LOL!

LT: Will each of your albums have a different theme?

Levphonic: Yes. I have to constantly evolve or I won't be able to make it as far as I want to. Each theme will just be another extension of my true self though.

LT: What was the inspiration for Time For Love?

Levphonic: There is a woman from my past that I was thinking of when I made that song. She knows who she is. LOL! We will leave it at that!

LT: How do you know when an album you make is complete? What tells you - this is it for now? 12 songs, 17 songs etc? Describe your decision process - how you know how many to include on each album

Levphonic: Like most true artists I am never satisfied with my work so this is the hardest process. I will toss this around about 30 songs and try to narrow it down until it feels right. I have taken enough songs off of The Urban Jungle to make part 2 and 3. Just to let you know I started this album in 2003. It was a long process but I think the first one is always the hardest.

LT: What advice do you have for any kids just getting into music? Artists trying to get signed or going the Independent route?

Levphonic: Be original! Love what you do and be willing to take some harsh realities head on. You must love this to do this. If you don't you are wasting your time. Always have a back-up plan! Meaning if you have to work some crazy jobs don't be afraid to do that. You can't just live life thinking that your break is around the corner so you shouldn't have to have a 9 to 5! That's just not being realistic. Practice your craft as much as possible learn the history of your music and other music as well. If you want to rap and old skool to you is 24's by T.I. then you need to learn about your music's history. Finally, if there is an opportunity that seems just too good to be true, it probably is. Go with your gut feeling and stay true to THYSELF!

Hooks was born in Memphis, Tennessee in 1925. He graduated from Howard University in 1944 and then joined the army shortly thereafter where he earned the rank of staff sergeant. After completing his army duty, Dr. Hooks enrolled in DePaul University College of Law after no Tennessee law school would admit him. Upon receiving his law degree, Hooks returned to Memphis to practice law and he joined the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. In 1965 he became Tennessees first black criminal court judge and in 1972 Richard Nixon appointed him to be one of the five commissioners of the FCC. It was good seeing (now retired) Olympic Gold Medalist Sprinter Michael Johnson on The Apprentice Sunday night. Michael Johnson won four Olympic gold medals and was crowned world champion eight times. Watching all the Winter Olympic coverage last month made me wonder what were the latest happenings with MJ. He wrote a book in '96 called "Slaying The Dragon: How To Turn Your Small Steps To Great Feats". A great book filled with great motivational words and personal stories that he shares through his experiences, trials, tribulations, and triumphs over the years. The Foreword is by The Greatest himself, Muhammad Ali. Some of the chapters included are Dreams, Discipline, Disappointment, Perserverence, Pressure and Performance. A great and inspiring read with many life lessons. Had to take it off my bookshelf and read it again this week just because I caught the last half hour of the show and saw him sitting at The Donald's Table! Go, Mike, Go! ~LT

Watching PBS' "Digital Nation," last night and with The Superbowl coming up this weekend, I couldn't help but think about this commercial from Apple in 1984.

I guess you could say this one's for those in the under 30 crowd who love and at times seem even addicted to tweetin', facebookin', iPoddin', myspacin', smartphoning, emailing, Internettin! (is that a word?), "don't call me, text me!" "don't look at me! IM me!", "Where's my blackberry? I cannot live without my blackberry?" "Has anyone seen my laptop? I can't function without it!" and more crowd.

The message I got from this commercial looking back on it 26 years later as an adult is, Don't become a slave to the technology out here today. Don't become a drone to it. It's actually OK to come outside and even fight and resist "the matrix" sometimes! To not lose yourself in all of this that we now have available to us technology wise today. That social etiquette's, social cues, being your natural funny, emotional, human self, your real, personality-filled, spiritual self, and being your true natural organic self and learning how to deal with real life issues and real life in the real world will always be important. Very important. To never become a mindless, soulless drone no matter how far the technology progresses in our lifetimes. Go outside! Engage in real life with other real people.

OK, I'm off my soapbox (for now!) Back to the commercial...

This commercial was Iconic. Big Impact in 1984. Many considered it brilliant and genius. I would have to put it as the most talked about commercial of '84. People were recording it on their VCR's to have a copy of it. This commercial became a big news story in 84 as well. To the point they interviewed the makers of it. We were all familiar with George Orwell's book "1984" as it was required reading in JH and HS in many schools but this commercial seemed to come out of nowhere. Definite attention grabber. People actually had group discussions on it's meaning. Some groups and organizations wanted it pulled because they thought it had hidden messages and meaning in it about society in general. Some thought it signaled what was about to be ushered in whether we wanted it to happen or not, again, like the book "1984" by Orwell. I remember it was controversial to many for various reasons.

At the same time I remember it being parodied. When something hits the Pop Culture mainstream on this level I guess it cannot help but touch a nerve here and there. This did. A pre-cursor to the computer digital age we are in now? Way before the concepts of The Matrix. That a computer company made it, doubled the impact! This commercial had a lot of folks thinking! Some were frightened for what was to come! Same impact the book had to many.

I finally saw Avatar. Visually, a beauty to behold, another look at where we are in special effects and computer animation as it continues to evolve, but story wise, same ole, same ole Hollywood formula! lol! what else is new? was not surprised in that regard. it's time for a change in that department.

On the technology: Basically, a 2 hour 40 minute film that makes the case to put the Entertainment Industry on notice that the new upgraded 3-D will be the next platform for Entertainment Technology both in theaters and home. Not your parents 3-D, and not even the 3-D they tried to bring back in the 80s but the next level. Cue the announcement this week.

On the story itself: To my surprise it did have good messages about a great many timely things, but the route they chose to go there was the same ole formula. (Dances With Wolves definitely and many others).

My suggestion would be to tell the story from the side of the indigenous peoples of the lands first and foremost from this point on. The white male hero infiltrating behind enemy lines, then falling in love with the native peoples and the culture, then having a change of heart after he's sold them out, (guilt) then feels bad about it and actually joins them in their fight, then his folks learn their wrongs at the way end after they have destroyed the peoples land for their precious resources route is played out to me. They need to flip the script on that for once. Tell it from the other side for once!

Zoe Saldana's character really should have been the main character and the narrator we hear throughout the film, not Sully. His character was not even needed to me in that role, but as they say, here we go again, and there they went.

That reminded me of the old saying that whoever wins the war, writes the history. As a result the story is always told from the victor's point of view. As a result much truth is distorted or never correctly told. This is what I mean when I say it's overdue that Hollywood flips the script on that approach esp as the makeup of America is changing as it is. People of color will not tolerate that for too much longer in storytelling, even in Sci Fi and Fantasy. ~LT

I read this book in 1990. In 'Jim Brown Out of Bounds' Jim Brown admits that he is no shining example and he has no shame in explaining his examples with raw honesty and raw truth with stories from his life and the wisdom and the stories in it have stayed with me to this day. What it is like being not only a professional athlete but an African American Professional Athlete in America and everything that goes with it. A great read. I would advise even today's pro-athletes to read it across the board. The Life, the highs, the lows, the dangers, the pitfalls, the womanizing, the philandering, the repercussions, and consequences of one's actions - he pretty much tells it all. Out of Bounds ain't no joke!

The Tiger Woods situation and reading Washington Wizards Brendan Haywood's latest blog post Buy Me Love weighing in from the perspective as a professional athlete (great post Brendan!) is also making me think of the old school NBA players such as Bill Russell, Wilt, and even Magic, Shaq, Jordan and more and that they must have a lot to say on Tiger's situation but I have not heard anyone of them speak up yet. Maybe we will in the upcoming days.

Joining me today in LT's Jazzy Radio Loft & Lounge for my ongoing "Follow Your Dreams, Listen To Your Heart" series which I started here in August 2006 is Soprano Chinwe Enu. Chinwe took time out of her busy schedule to talk to us here in the Lounge!

LT: Hello, Chinwe! Thank you for swinging by The Lounge! I have read so many good things about you, it's an honor to speak with you. Where are originally from?

CE: I am originally from Nigeria. My home town is Enugu, but I lived in Lagos, Nigeria till I was 15. I then emigrated to the US, straight to boarding school at Phillips Exeter Academy in New Hampshire. My family is in New York, and that was where I would go for summers.

LT: When did you first become interested in Classical music?

CE: I grew up listening to jazz and Classical music, my dad played the organ and piano when he was younger. I became interested in classical singing and opera at Exeter when I began to take voice lessons. My voice teacher at the time, Mary Ann Valaitis told me I had a good voice for opera and encouraged me to audition for the Young Artists Vocal Program at Boston University Tanglewood Institute. It was at Tanglewood, in the summer of 1996, that I really fell in love with opera and classical singing.

LT: How old were you when you first started singing?

CE: At age 16.

LT: Were you always drawn to Classical music?

CE: Hmmm. When I was really younger, I wouldn't say I was particularly drawn to Classical music, I really liked it, but I really liked other music as well. It really was when I started singing at age 16, and after I did the Tanglewood Program that my love for Classical Music, particularly classical vocal music, really came out.

LT: Who were/are some of your musical influences?

CE: I consider my current voice teacher and mentor, Carmen Balthrop to be my strongest musical influence because she has been crucial in helping me shape my vocal and artistic technique. Another person I have been influenced by is my former voice teacher Charles Williams. We are still close and I consider him one of my mentors.

As I mentioned earlier, when I was 16 and saw Jessye Norman sing at Tanglewood, I decided that I wanted to sing like her, so she definitely was one of my very first musical influences. I have also been influenced by Grace Bumbry, whom I worked with in Salzburg, Austria. Singers I absolutely admire and love to listen to include Leontyne Price...I love Ms. Price, she is absolutely amazing. She is the true DIVA!

LT: I would have to say that my mother was the first person to turn me on to Classical Music by playing it in the house all the time. In 1981 she tooks us to see the movie 'Diva' starring Wilhelmenia Wiggins Fernandez. That was the first time I saw someone who looked like us singing Classical music and Opera though I found out later in my life through my Mom that there were many more African and African American Classical singers, composers, artists, etc. Did you ever see the movie Diva? If so, what did you think of it?

CE: I love that movie, not really because of the plot but because of the MUSIC. I cry every time I watch it because of the way she sings the aria "Ebben ne andro lontana" from the opera "La Wally" by Alfredo Catalani. That aria means a lot, it was the final trigger for me when I decided that I must pursue singing, I was listening to Renee Fleming sing it, and in that moment, I knew that I just HAD to pursue singing (again with the drama)! I will be singing that aria in my recital in November, so come on out and hear it!

LT: How is Classical music received in Nigeria and in Africa abroad?

CE: It is well received. Classical music has a small but loyal and growing audience.

LT: What made you take that leap of faith and decide to really start following your dream of singing professionally full time?

CE: I reached a point in my life when I finally came to realize that it was up to ME to pursue my dream, and no one else. I could not keep blaming external forces and factors for where I was in my life. This was in 2005. I was absolutely miserable on the track I was on (that of being an attorney) and I saw that if I did not make the leap, and at least try, I would be miserable for the rest of my life. Sounds dramatic I know, but hey, I am an opera singer! ;-) I officially began to "go for it" on June 20th, 2005, the day after my 26th birthday.

LT: What are some of the challenges of being a Classical singer in the 21st Century as composed to years past?

CE: Getting exposure! Things have gotten easier because of the Internet and social networking sites, but that issue still remains true. Also classical music is nowhere as popular as other kinds of music, sometimes there is a perception that it is "boring" or "serious" music, so we draw less crowds. This is so different from the Western world in the 16th, 17th and 18th century when classical music was the entertainment! But we keep on trucking, because Classical music fans tend to be die hard and loyal, and are less flighty than popular music fans.

LT: How would you classify or rate America's taste today for Classical music and Opera Singers, etc. compared to other countries in the world?

CE: European countries still worship classical music and opera. It is not as popular in the United States, but there are quite a few die hard fans. In Africa, classical music has been around, but opera is slowly gaining ground. It was such a thrill to perform in my home country of Nigeria, my recital was very well received and there is a small but loyal following of opera and classical music buffs in Nigeria. As for Asia, opera seems to be popular there, I would love to perform in Asia one day.

LT: Have you been approached or are you pursuing any of the Classical labels to do your own album?

CE: No not yet, but it will happen soon!

LT: What are some of the countries you have traveled to to perform?

CE: I have performed in Italy, several cities in Austria, Nigeria and in various states in the U.S.

LT: Where are some of the places in the DC/MD/VA area where you have performed your recitals?

CE: I have performed at the Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center, Georgetown University Law Center, the Historical Society of Washington DC, National City Christian Church, the Metropolitan African Methodist Church and several other churches in the area.

LT: Where can we see you next?

CE: Come to my November recital of art songs and arias at St. Luke's Parish in Bladensburg MD. Saturday, November 14th, 2009 at 7.30pm. I will also be performing in Tampa, Florida, at the Asaba Memorial International Symposium at the University of South Florida on October 9th and 10th, 2009.

LT: What are your future plans? I have one year left in my second Bachelors degree in Music at the University of Maryland School of Music. I am scheduled to finish in December 2010. After that I plan to audition, perform and participate in vocal competitions.

LT: What advice would you give to young people interested in the arts and pursuing a career in classical music?

CE: In the end, persistence is what wins out, no matter how little or how much talent you have. If you are persistent, no matter what other people say, if you trust yourself and keep taking little steps, day by day, you will eventually succeed.

An Open Letter to Cathy Hughes

Dear Ms Hughes:

As the Founder of Radio One, the nation’s largest African American broadcaster, I have admired your unprecedented accomplishments for close to thirty years. While starting my career in Washington DC, I watched and listened to you for years during your humble beginnings at WOL-AM. In the late 80’s, I will always be grateful for you hiring me to program WMMJ, your first FM outlet.

Our accomplishments during my tenure at WMMJ continue to be the highlight of my career. Rising with a weak signal in a competitive DC market, Majic 102.3 was the third in the country to adopt the Urban AC format. Taking WMMJ from a zero market share to the number 4 AC spot, in a mere nine months, was the catalyst for what now makes you the dominant force in urban radio.

In recent months we have witnessed a media uprising of coverage that I believe is a direct effect of America’s first Black President.. Broadcast media is the country’s trend setter and Black radio continues to be Black America’s only mainstream voice. Although CNN airs Black in America in the midst of summer, and the complexion of pundits has darken during the rise of Obama, cable television and network TV still has no person of color hosting a prime time show.

What happens behind the cameras and microphones has been getting worse. Minority ownership is down, while the executive barrier in management still mirrors the post civil rights era. Debra Lee, Black Entertainment Television’s CEO, is a prime example of a face that accepts socially unacceptable imagery that permeates most corporate machines. BET continues to blind us with shows like “Franke & Neffe”, the modern day equivalent to the slapstick “Amos and Andy”. Historically, Black America has always been short changed in our images, perceptions and representations. We can’t expect change, unless people of color program it, demand it and change the Madison Avenue view on Non Urban Dictate. Educating listeners of what goes on behind the scenes will help not hurt. TV One has been a huge step in the right direction and for that I applaud you.

Few are in the position to empower, organize and inform millions of people that are thirsting for content, information and representation. Black radio needs voices now more than ever. Rush Limbaugh, is a prime example of a business plan that not only is financially rewarding but changes direction in American culture.

The old attitude that people of color don’t want or need information has now been proven false. The digital age has brought millions online, searching for news, talk and information.

Basheer Jones, the 24 year old morning talk show host at your Cleveland outlet is a prime example. Active, smart and in touch, Basheer is the voice of a generation never heard by the so called mainstream. Radio One gave him that chance. Someone has to end the bleeding of this music only culture that pumps only bling, misogyny, drugs and sex on future generations.

Ms Hughes, you have that power. For the past few months, your voice has been heard on over fifty of your stations, in a series of two to three minute announcements, 10 to 12 times daily. Those who have not heard the announcements (www.RealityRadioonline.com) might guess the subject might be health care, the economy, education or maybe a response to the racist attacks by Tea Baggers, Birthers, Glenn Beck or Fox News on President Obama.

Instead you aimed your microphone in opposition to HR 848, The Performance Rights Act. You have berated members of the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) for months, without even a minute of an honest debate. The truth is Ms Hughes, you have pushed that button because you knew you could. Mainstream media rarely covers any issue except black on black violent crime. If Sean Hannity or Bill O’Reilly railed on distinguished CBC members like John Conyers, Sheila Jackson-Lee or Hank Johnson, Black radio and press would be outraged. Al Sharpton, Tom Joyner and Michael Baisden would be defending the CBC members you have furiously attacked. But for now their voices are silenced only because their allegiance to you. Power often brings a free pass.

Fear tactics seem to be today’s replacement for news and information. Unfortunately, the listeners you are licensed to serve continue to get your commentary with only entertainment news. While in DC, you made your mark as the “Queen of information”, branding “Information is Power” on your flagship station WOL-AM. News content is none existent in a world where a Black adult is 25 times more likely to hear a syndicated music host like Tom Joyner or Michael Baisden. Syndication on Black radio has increased at an alarming 343%, while white music syndication has decreased in the past ten years. The “less is more” philosophy basically adds up to controlling the messengers.

Your voice for the first time has become an example of Black media telling Black America a series of distortions. The Truth is the HR 848 would not kill Black radio, 80% of Black owned radio stations would pay a mere $5,000 or less royalty fee. What you have failed to mention in “Reality Radio” is a tax goes to the government. The “PRA” would help thousands of musicians and singers to be paid a royalty, just like the songwriters have been paid for decades. HR 848 is simply a civil rights issue. HR 848 is not about Jay Z or Beyonce the few millionaires, it’s about Ron Smith, the guitarist from Frankie Beverly and Maze who continues to keep your listeners entertained in the hybrid of music only formats that Radio One and most broadcasters deliver everyday.

Only the US, China, North Korea and Iran don’t pay radio royalties to performers and musicians. I do understand protecting your bottom line, but doing the right thing and stating facts is not an option.

The marriage between the recording industry and radio continues to bring in tens of millions of dollars yearly in commercials, summer jams, jam jams, free concerts and record company giveaways. The musical attack on young minds is another issue, but more importantly the recording industry marriage has allowed a profitable way to often satisfy stakeholders while forsaking content for young listeners. In 2008, Radio One claimed 137 million in profits for 53 stations. The Performance Rights Act is passed the worst case scenario guesstimate would cost 5 million in royalties, not bad at all saying that music makes up 85% of programming.

Black America is starving for representation on a myriad of issues, I hope you decide to focus your energy, influence and voice on any issue that might help the listeners that you are licensed to serve. I fully understand your business acumen but the door is wide open for meaningful growth and profit.

I will never forget your on-air effort against the once racially biased Washington Post. The then bold move to have listeners burn copies of The Post, into a raging fire outside the studio on 4th and H in DC. I burned the Washington Post one morning well before I ever met or worked for you. I hope to see that same Cathy Hughes leading by example.

It is time to stop living on a legacy and continue to keep building on one.

I recently heard her album and I am still loving it from beginning to end. The name of it is Addicted To Life - The LP . Great album. Organic, soulful grooves and a beautiful voice. Teisha Marie took time our of her busy schedule to give us the latest haps in her life and describes what was the inspiration to Addicted to Life - The LP.

LT: Welcome to the Loft & Lounge, Teisha Marie and thanks for coming through! What was the inspiration for your album Addicted To Life - The LP?

TM: The title itself was suggested by a friend of mine and I liked it and decided it was fitting for the music I want to represent. We live in a society where addiction is encouraged because it benefits others, so instead of being chemically dependent , why not be addicted to life? The everyday things that occur in life are things I take notice of and use as inspiration when writing songs.

LT: Is this your first album?

TM: Yes, this is my first album, but not my first musical project. I released Addicted to Life - The EP in August 2007.

LT: How would you describe your music?

TM: I would say it's soulful, quirky, eclectic, and delicious!

LT: Where did you grow up? Where are you from?

TM: I grew up in quite a few places (England, New Jersey, Germany, Virginia and Maryland), so it's hard to say where I'm from. Sometimes I question if planet Earth is my origin. Ha ha!

LT: How long have you been singing?

TM: I've been singing all my life and decided to start sharing it via recording in 2007.

LT: What is it like to be an independent artist today in the 21st Century with all these advances in technology?

TM: I think that it is a great triumph (with some difficulty from time to time) to be an independent artist. Oftentimes, the public doesn't realize that independent artists do 90-100% of necessary work themselves. The publicity, production (or selection of producers), marketing, advertising , styling, touring, and artist development are all implemented and maintained by the artist. I appreciate that I have a major role in the creation of my artistic destiny.

LT: How has the Internet helped your artistic quest?

TM: The Internet is extremely helpful in allowing me to connect with people in the various parts of the world in a matter of seconds. It helps me to cover ground that I may not be physically be able to cover in a short time span.

LT: Who are your inspirations?

TM: I have so many inspirations. The most direct are Stevie Wonder (his transparency and timeless music), Nancy Wilson (her vocal phrasing and articulation), Aretha Franklin (she oozes soul into every note), Al Green (such a warm sound), Ella Fitzgerald (a technical genius!), and life, of course!

LT: What is it like performing live compared to recording in the studio?

TM: I liken performing in the studio to being an athlete in training. The adrenaline you feel performing live is such a powerful thing and it takes you to so many different places emotionally, whereas in the studio, you're putting together the foundation of your presentation.

LT: Do you prefer one over the other?

TM: I enjoy both equally. I enjoy the studio because it allows me to be intimate with myself and when it's time to perform live, I get to be intimate with a group of people. I just love creating, whether it's in the studio or live.

LT: Take us through the recording process from the moment of your inspirations of writing your own songs to the final product.

TM: The recording process is a funny thing. The inspiration for songs comes from personal experiences. The actual creation process is an interesting process. Sometimes words will come to me first, then melody, other times it's the opposite effect. While in the studio, tons of ideas come to me as far as harmonies and lyrical delivery are concerned. I can spend anywhere to 1 hour to 1 week on a song, it really varies. I know that the gift I have is on loan from God, so I am amazed at what the final product sounds like every time I create a song.

LT: I really love the positive and meaningful heartfelt and soulful lyrics of your album overall. Two in particular are very moving to me: "Txt Msg" and "Legacy". What were the inspirations for "Txt Msg" and "Legacy"?

TM: "Txt Msg" came about from observing the kids I work with on a daily basis (I'm a teacher by day) and seeing how much they look to the media to be their teacher. Often, children aren't interested in knowing the difference between entertainment and reality, I wrote the song to let kids know that they can be/do anything they want to and need to make the right choices.

"Legacy" came about from wanting to dedicate a song to grandparents. My mother and father's parents are deceased and I miss them greatly. I wish I could ask them for advice and get to know them as an adult. So, this song is my dedication to them because I wouldn't be who I am without them.
